Cetacean research Research Assistant position
- The Opportunity
_ *We are seeking an enthusiastic Research Assistant to support conducting a cetacean marine survey project in Dubai waters. The project aims to gather information on the three most common small cetacean species occurring in UAE waters (finless porpoise, humpback and bottlenose dolphins) utilising boat based surveys and Photo-identification methodologies.The Research Assistant will be responsible for supporting the Senior Research Assistant and PI in conducting the activities of the boat-based cetacean survey. The role requires strong organisation and communication skills, an attention to detail, ability to work independently in a meticulous and reliable manner, ability to work well with colleagues in both research and cooperative living situations and good proficiency in oral and written English.This is a part-time paid position (approximately 2 days per week possibly including some weekends) for 10-12 months. It does not cover UAE residency visa, accommodation or health insurance. The position will be based in Dubai UAE starting asap.
This project is run through Zayed University and supported by the UAE Dolphin Project Initiative,
Atlantis the Palm Dubai.Benefits: *_
This is a unique occasion to join an active research group on the conservation of cetaceans in UAE and learn key skills in applied marine research specifically in marine mammal monitoring.
Junior Research Assistant: Job Requirements
Job Type: Part-time
Part-time hours: 14 per week
Essential Responsibilities
1) Conducting boat based survey
– Collecting scientific data (survey data/ Photo-Identification data)
– Leading the data recording (database management)
– Managing the volunteers in the field
2) Supporting data analysis
– Supporting the Senior RA and PI in compiling and verifying databases
– Supporting the Senior RA and PI in data analysis
– Supporting the Senior RA and PI in preparing presentation or other written material
3) Organising team personnel
– Maintaining contact with volunteers,
– Ensure collection of volunteer data (contacts/ liability waivers forms)
– Organising shifts for the surveys
Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have:
– a background in biology or environmental science (or related fields, BSc or higher required),
– strong interest in the marine environment and conservation,
– strong desire to pursue a career in marine sciences,
– comfortable to work long hours at sea on a boat
– good proficiency in excel and others data management software
– excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
– excellent interpersonal skills.
