SEO Content Writer : Job Responsibilities and Work Requirements
The primary purpose of the Report Writer position is to assist the Waste Services and Parks and Roads Services Branches with the development, review and coordination of Council and Committee reports, presentations, and associated materials, including bylaws, policies, and capital/operating budget reports. Working in a highly technical, operationally complex, and politically sensitive/confidential arena, the Report Writer will:
- Provide oversight to branch staff (Branch Managers, Branch Strategic Coordinators, Subject Matter Experts, and branch authors) related to Council and Committee report content that is deemed highly sensitive, politically complex, and/or confidential
- Lead the development of all Waste Services and Parks and Roads Services Council Reports by creating report plans that guide the the content, style, and tone of each report
- Collaborate with directors, branch managers, subject matter experts, and business partners in gathering, writing, and reviewing/editing report content that is deemed highly sensitive, politically complex, and/or confidential information
- Synthesize highly complex, technical information and translate it into plain language that is easily understood by Council and the general public. Assess the impact and implication of report content, tone and style and manage any associated risk, including risk related to public perception of the branch, department, and the Corporation
- Reconcile conflicting information and perspectives and put context around department information
- Draft, revise, and edit reports and related presentations, Q&A’s, and briefing notes for members of the leadership and extended leadership team, based on comprehensive understanding of the function and operational integration of each program area within City Operations and across other departments as it relates to Corporate and Council directive
- Act as the branch subject matter expert in report writing and the report process
- Maintain close and collaborative working relationships with City Operations Branches and Sections, as well as Business Partners and other Departments to resolve report issues including barriers to timelines, quality of reports, etc.
- Lead the internal report review process; identify appropriate business partners in Finance, Communications & Engagement, IT, and Legal
- Manage the report schedule/tracker, ensuring that all branch reports meet scheduled milestones and timelines, including the coordination of timely and effective review and input of City Operation reports by Business Partners (e.g. Communications, IT, Law, Finance) and other Departments
- Act as a conduit between policy areas and Council, Regional partners and COE senior management to identify policy related links between areas
- Qualitative evaluation of external (to the department) feedback, advising report leads of potentially contradictory, sensitive, or misaligned comments, potential impacts, and alternate approaches
- Identifying areas of continuous improvement to support increased report acumen within the branch. Execute ongoing performance monitoring, research, and implementation of best related to municipal reporting strategies practices
- Support the development, coordination and implementation of various projects on behalf of the Branch Managers office.
- Facilitate and support the implementation of department and branch culture plans and initiatives
- Act as a branch writing expert with a branch-level strategic lens, supporting various documents and correspondence reviews on behalf of the branch managers office
- Other related duties as required
Minimum Educational Qualifications Requirements : SEO Content Writer
- A university degree in Commerce, business administration, public administration or a related discipline such communications, English, business, arts, or related subject
- Two (2) years related experience in strategic and operational planning, working with corporate performance measures and budgets, writing and editing reports and correspondence that span a variety of technical and/political topics
- Change Management Certification would be an asset
- Ability to synthesize complex and technically diverse information gathered during Council/Committee and senior leadership meetings and translate it into a form that is clear and easy to understand; exceptional plain-language writing skills
- Ability to assess the impact and implications of report content, tone, and style and manage associated risk
- Strong relationship management skills to support and work with all levels of leadership and staff
- Exceptional time management, project management, and organizational skills; ability to set priorities, handle multiple report assignments simultaneously, and meet critical deadlines
- Proficiency in Google applications including Gmail, Sheets, and Docs
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of each program within Parks and Roads Services as well as cross-departmental impacts is an asset
- Excellent negotiation, problem solving, and conflict management skills
- High attention to detail, including spelling and grammar
- Ability to apply strict confidentiality protocols for reports that are highly sensitive or restricted
- Familiarity with municipal operations is an asset
